B.C. has now administered more than one million second doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said today that 4,511,923 doses of vaccines have been administered to date; 1,001,192 of those being second doses. This means that 77.7 per cent of all adults and 76.2 per cent of those 12 and older have received a dose.

Henry said due to fluctuations in vaccine supply, some days mass clinics will have more of one mRNA vaccine than the other. Currently, there is more Moderna supply, and there will be some decrease in Pfizer shipments in the coming weeks.

“We will do our best to make sure that we have both products available at our clinics, but sometimes that simply isn’t possible,” said Henry. “If you are offered the other mRNA vaccine, please be assured that it is safe and effective to have either one of these products here in Canada and here in B.C.”

B.C. health authorities reported 56 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 147,187 cases.

Of the new cases, 12 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 18 in the Fraser Health region, three in the Island Health region, 15 in the Interior Health region, seven in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

There are 1,150 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 111 of those people are hospitalized, 41 of whom are in intensive care.

There were no new virus-related deaths reported today. One healthcare outbreak has ended, but active outbreaks remain at two long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and one acute care facility.

Henry said the province has a “strong foundation” for the summer ahead, given the sustained drop in hospitalizations and new cases.
